DENVER—Gov. Bill Ritter says flags on state government buildings will be lowered Tuesday in honor of former Colorado Senate president Ray Powers.

Powers died Friday after suffering an arm injury that became infected. He was 79.

The Colorado Springs Republican served in the state Legislature from 1979 to 2000, when he was forced to step down due to term limits. He served as Senate president during his final two years and earned praise from both sides of the aisle during his career.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at Springs First Church of the Nazarene in Colorado Springs.
