University of Denver golfer Stephanie Sherlock shot a final-round, 4-under-par 68 to overtake Jane Chin of Cal-Irvine and claim medalist honors at the Ron Moore Women’s Intercollegiate and lead the eighth-ranked Pioneers to the team title Wednesday.

Sherlock, a junior, started the day at Highlands Ranch Golf Club in second place, two strokes behind Chin, who shot an even-par 72 and finished second. It was the sixth career title for Sherlock. DU senior Dawn Shockley, from Estes Park High School, finished fifth with a 3-under 213 total.

The Pioneers won the tournament for the fifth consecutive year by shooting an 8-under 280 in the final round, the third-best score in school history.

DU finished at 11-under 853, 17 strokes better than runner-up Texas Christian.

L.A. basketball player makes pledge to CU.

According to Internet recruiting sites, 6-foot-6 small forward Keegan Hornbuckle of Campbell Hall High School in Los Angeles has given an oral commitment to the Colorado men’s basketball program.

Hornbuckle became the first known commitment received by CU coach Jeff Bzdelik and is expected to sign during the November signing period.

Hornbuckle told he also received scholarship offers from Oregon State, Pepperdine, Southern Methodist, Saint Mary’s and others.

Falcons picked to win Atlantic Hockey.

Air Force, last year’s Atlantic Hockey Association Tournament champion, is the choice of the league’s coaches to win the AHA title this season. The Falcons received seven of 10 first-place votes in the poll. Mercyhurst was picked to finish second.

Crush has new coordinator.

The Colorado Crush hired Chris MacKeown as the Arena Football League team’s offensive coordinator. MacKeown most recently was head coach of af2’s Amarillo Dusters.

He was an assistant for Crush coach Mike Dailey at Indiana in 2001 and 2002.
