COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Searchers say they believe they have located the body of a missing Fort Carson soldier who failed to report for duty Monday at the mountain post.

El Paso County Search and Rescue worker Steve Sperry says the body was discovered about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Pikes Peak in an area known as the bottomless pit. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Lt. Lari Sevene says the person who died appears to have fallen.

The body has not been positively identified, but Fort Carson chief of staff Shannon Davis issued a written statement indicating that a member of the 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division had died.

The missing soldier’s name has not been released.

Pikes Peak rangers found a vehicle belonging to the 23-year-old lieutenant at the top of the peak Sunday.
