Members of the Communications Workers of America at Qwest have turned down a proposed new contract covering 20,000 employees in 13 states.
CWA District 7 officials said union and Qwest representatives will meet in the next few days to discuss a schedule to resume negotiations.
Qwest and the CWA on Aug. 17 had reached a tentative agreement that called for wage increases totaling 9 percent over three years, but with higher health-care premiums. The agreement was subject to approval by union members.
The CWA in August had authorized a strike if a new deal couldn’t be reached.
Qwest said today that the company “remains completely operational.”
