A chemical blamed for sickening infants in China has been found in candy on American shelves. Connecticut officials said Wednesday that tests on White Rabbit Creamy Candy sold in the state found melamine.

Last week, California’s health agency announced traces of melamine were discovered in White Rabbit candy it tested.

Queensway Foods Company Inc. of California distributed the candy and says it is recalling it.

In China on Wednesday, the parents of a 1-year-old boy who developed kidney stones after drinking infant formula tainted with melamine sued the dairy at the heart of the scandal, state media reported, as tests implicated 15 more companies. The case is believed to be the first civil lawsuit filed in response to the contamination. Nearly 54,000 children have been sickened, and four infants have died.
