FORT MORGAN, Colo.—Authorities say a man is hospitalized with life-threatening head wounds after he was attacked with an ax.

Morgan County Sheriff Jim Crone says the assault happened Tuesday night and that 911 dispatchers received calls about a man who was not breathing after being “struck by an ax.”

Twenty-five-year-old Fermin Perez was airlifted to Denver Health Medical Center to undergo surgery but his condition was not immediately available.

Crone says 25-year-old Jose Barron was arrested in connection with the attack. He’s being held without bail for investigation of first-degree assault.
