The claim:
“You also said that Barack Obama was not ready to be commander in chief.”
Trying to challenge Sen. Barack Obama’s preparedness to be president, Gov. Sarah Palin used Sen. Joe Biden’s own words against him during Thursday night’s vice presidential debate.
The verdict:
As Biden and Palin debated records on Iraq during the debate, Palin noted Biden did question Obama’s readiness.
“I think he can be ready, but right now I don’t believe he is,” Biden said in 2007. “The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training.”
In an Aug. 19, 2007, debate among Democratic hopefuls, moderator George Stephanopoulos pressed Biden whether he stood by a recent quote.
Biden said, “I stand by that statement.”
It’s worth noting that in May 2008, Biden changed his tune. In an interview with Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week,” Biden said: “That was a year ago. He’s learned a hell of a lot.”
Still, he said what he said. Based on those first comments, Palin’s assessment is true.
