HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — Paula Creamer birdied the final three holes for a 4-under-par 68 Saturday and a one-stroke lead over Angela Stanford in the Samsung World Championship.
Creamer had a 6-under 210 total. Stanford led for much of the day but hurt herself with two double bogeys on the back nine. She birdied the final two holes for a 69.
Katherine Hull eagled No. 4 and also birdied 18 for a 69 to stay within two strokes of the lead. Lorena Ochoa (70) also is two shots back.
• Tag Ridings (71) missed a short par putt on the final hole to fall into a tie for the lead with Charles Howell III (69) after the third round of the Turning Stone Resort Championship in Verona, N.Y.
• Martin Kaymer and Jarmo Sandelin shared the third-round lead after another wet and windy day at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in St. Andrews, Scotland.
Big day for Breeders’ qualifiers
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Thorn Song cruised to a 1 1/4-length victory under Robby Albarado in the Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland to clinch a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita in three weeks.
In another “win and you’re in” Breeders’ Cup qualifier (the Juvenile) at Keeneland, Square Eddie was the runaway winner of the Lane’s End Breeders Futurity.
• Vineyard Haven (Juvenile) and Sky Diva (Juvenile Fillies) raced to impressive stakes wins at Belmont Park in New York to earn Breeders’ Cup berths.
Venus ousted in semifinals
STUTTGART, Germany — Venus Williams lost 6-7 (8), 7-5, 6-2 to soon-to-be No. 1 Jelena Jankovic, who overcame a foot injury to advance to the final of the Porsche Grand Prix.
Jankovic will play Nadia Petrova, who beat Victoria Azarenka 6-4, 6-4 in the other semifinal.
• Andy Roddick was upset by Tomas Berdych 6-7 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (3) in the semifinals of the Japan Open in Tokyo.
In the other semifinal, Juan Martin Del Potro defeated Richard Gasquet 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
• Dmitry Tursunov advanced to the Open de Moselle final in Metz, France, using his powerful serve to beat Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-4.
Tursunov will face Paul-Henri Mathieu, who beat Adrian Mannarino 7-6 (8), 7-6 (1).
Crew blanks Galaxy
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Alejandro Moreno scored his career-best ninth goal of the season, and the Columbus Crew solidified its hold on first place in the MLS’ Eastern Conference with a 1-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy.
• Alecko Eskandarian had a goal and an assist to help Chivas beat D.C. United 3-0.
• Chad Barrett scored two goals in Toronto FC’s 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls.
• Steve Ralston and Taylor Twellman each scored a goal in a two-minute stretch to help the New England Revolution salvage a 2-2 tie with Real Salt Lake.
