GOLDEN — Bobby Coy scored on a 43-yard run to lead Mesa State to a 27-24 win over Colorado Mines, ruining the Orediggers’ comeback bid and keeping Mesa State tied with Chadron State atop the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Mesa (4-2, 4-0 RMAC) jumped out to a 17-0 lead on a 2-yard run by Coy, a 13-yard pass from Phil Vigil to Ricky Noble, and a 40-yard field goal by Jared Keating. Corey Huck started Mines’ (4-2, 3-1) comeback right after the field goal with a 100-yard kickoff return in the second quarter.
After Keating kicked another field goal early in the third quarter, the Orediggers scored 17 straight points to take a 24-20 lead. The touchdowns came on two 20-yard passes from David Pesek, the first to Tom Kastens and the other to Keegan Moyer. Colin Baker added a 30-yard field goal.
Chadron State routed New Mexico Highlands 56-14.
Nebraska-Kearney 41, CSU-Pueblo 10
PUEBLO — The Lopers dominated from the start, outgaining CSU-Pueblo 121-4 yards in the first quarter and recovering a fumble for a touchdown.
In the second quarter, UNK (3-3, 3-1 RMAC) redshirt freshman Rustin Dring ripped off a 98-yard touchdown run, the longest offensive play completed by any CSU-Pueblo opponent.
Aromous Robinson had the best offensive day for the ThunderWolves (2-3, 1-3), catching seven passes for 59 yards.
Adams State 28, Western New Mexico 21
SILVER CITY, N.M. — Jarison Johnson scored on a 5-yard run with five minutes to play to lead the Grizzlies (1-5, 1-3 RMAC) to a come-from-behind win. Adams State got a two-point conversion on a pass from Stephen Baca to Kenny Jenkins for the seven-point cushion.
Adams State took a 20-14 lead in the second quarter on two field goals from Dustin Bolt. The Mustangs (0-5, 0-4) took a 21-20 lead at the 8:15 mark of the fourth quarter on Trammell McGill’s 6-yard run, setting up Johnson’s run three minutes later.
Fort Lewis 20, Western State 17
DURANGO — Fort Lewis ended a four-game losing streak and got its first win at Ray Dennison Memorial Field since 2006 with the win over the Mountaineers (2-3, 2-2 RMAC).
The Skyhawks (2-4, 1-3) overcame wet, sloppy conditions to outgain Western 364-314 yards and had 144 yards on the ground, helping them overcome five turnovers. The Fort Lewis defense stopped Western three times in the fourth quarter.
Austin College 36, Colorado College 17
COLORADO SPRINGS — The team from Sherman, Texas, pulled away in the fourth quarter thanks to two Tigers turnovers, keeping CC winless.
Trailing 22-17 with 3:45 remaining, CC (0-4, 0-2 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) got the ball at its 35-yard line. But David Mauro fumbled, and Matt Finke returned it 36 yards for a score. On the Tigers’ next possession, Kenneth Eneh picked off a John McDonald pass and returned it to the CC 18-yard line, setting up a 7-yard run by Ross Hasten.
