Air Force quarterback Shea Smith is scheduled to return to practice today after sitting out Monday’s workouts as the Falcons prepare for Saturday’s road game against San Diego State.

Examinations ruled out a concussion as the reason Smith left the game early in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 33-27 loss to Navy at Falcon Stadium, an academy spokesperson said.

After the game, coach Troy Calhoun indicated Smith had experienced flu-like symptoms throughout the game.

Freshman Tim Jefferson replaced Smith, a senior who has started all five of Air Force’s games, against Navy and engineered an 84-yard scoring drive that cut Navy’s lead to six points.

Sooners on the mend

NORMAN, Okla. — Coach Bob Stoops said he expects Oklahoma to be at full strength Saturday against Texas.

Although defensive tackle Gerald McCoy (toe) and center Jon Cooper of Fort Collins suffered minor injuries against Baylor, Stoops said both could return this week to face Texas — and the Sooners might even have injured defensive linemen Demarcus Granger (foot) and Frank Alexander (arm) back.

“Everyone practiced to some degree (Monday), and right now our trainers are pretty optimistic and feel that everyone will be ready to play,” Stoops said.

Pelini investigates claim

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said there was insufficient evidence to prove Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel’s claim that a Cornhuskers player spit on him before Saturday’s game.

Pelini said he spoke with his team and talked with Missouri coach Gary Pinkel and characterized his investigation as a lot of “he said/he said.”

• Nebraska’s Oct. 18 game at Iowa State will start at 11:30 a.m. and be televised by Versus.

Carpenter questionable

TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson said he wants to see how quarterback Rudy Carpenter’s sprained left ankle responds before deciding whether he’ll play at No. 8 USC on Saturday.

If Carpenter, who has made 36 starts in a row, cannot go, the Sun Devils would turn to Danny Sullivan, who has completed 1-of-8 passes for minus-1 yard.
