A relative of two prominent Colorado Republicans came out Monday to endorse the Democrat in the state’s combative U.S. Senate race.

Karen Allard Campbell is Sen. Wayne Allard’s niece and former Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell’s daughter-in-law.

She said at a news conference that it was Democrat Mark Udall — not his GOP opponent, Bob Schaffer — who was best-suited to take over her uncle’s Senate seat in January.

Udall “has the ability to reach out beyond divisive partisan politics and he can work to solve problems that will move Colorado forward,” said Allard Campbell.

Standing in the crowd at the news conference was Allard Campbell’s husband, whose father was the extremely popular Republican senator until his retirement from politics four years ago.

Colin Campbell called Udall “a good and decent public servant,” but added that he was voting for Schaffer.
