DENVER—A 25-year-old man long considered a person of interest in the shooting death of Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was indicted today on murder charges.

The Denver District Attorney’s office says Willie D. Clark faces 39 counts, including murder, attempted murder, and assault in connection with the 2007 New Year’s Day shooting that killed the football player.

Williams’ mother, Rosalind Williams, told The Associated Press the news brought her peace but that it was also “bittersweet” because it brought painful memories.

Clark is in federal custody in a separate case involving drug charges. He is the first person to be indicted in the shooting.

Williams was killed while riding in a rented limousine early on Jan. 1, 2007, after leaving a Denver nightclub. Police say at least 15 shots were fired into the limo. Williams was 24.

The indictment says Williams and Clark were at the club with separate groups of friends and there was an altercation between the two groups. Witnesses told investigators Clark got into an SUV and followed the rented limo.
