Getting your player ready...

Pressure to make the playoffs takes on a whole new meaning with the Los Angeles Galaxy. Just ask Rapids all-time leading scorer Paul Bravo.

Since becoming director of soccer for the Galaxy in 2007, Bravo has been in charge of scouting talent to surround stars David Beckham and Landon Donovan, two players who give the team unprecedented mainstream appeal.

The Galaxy (7-12-8), which stands on the edge of missing the playoffs for the third consecutive year, hosts the Rapids (10-13-4) on Sunday with Beckham and Donovan away on international duty.

While the Rapids, who currently occupy a wild-card spot, cannot clinch or be eliminated from the playoff race this weekend, the Galaxy can be sent packing.

“This franchise is a very proud franchise that is used to being a part of MLS playoffs, and a part of MLS Cups, and (U.S.) Open Cup finals and challenging for trophies,” Bravo said. “Do we feel the pressure more so? Yeah, I think so.”

The Galaxy has been a black hole this season. Team president Alexi Lalas was fired, and coach Ruud Gullit resigned the same day in August. Veteran coach Bruce Arena was brought in to right the ship, but he has inherited an MLS-best offense (50 goals) and MLS-worst defense (55 against).

With the worst record in MLS, despite its stars, one would think a major offseason overhaul would be in line for the Galaxy. Bravo was cautious, noting good teams in MLS have established chemistry and resisted wholesale changes.

Rapids ready.

Will the absence of Donovan and Beckham give the Rapids a false sense of security at the Home Depot Center? The Rapids are preaching the opposite. Pablo Mastroeni said he expects those spots to be filled by players hungry to prove their worth.

“Since I’ve been here for the last three years, I think this is the most united I’ve seen our team,” Jacob Peterson said.

With Conor Casey (red card) and Omar Cummings (international duty) out, interim coach Gary Smith said he is leaning toward pairing Peterson with Tom McMan- us in attack. McManus (knee) said he felt he could play 70 to 80 minutes Sunday. Nick LaBrocca is expected to replace Mehdi Ballouchy in midfield. Smith said any defensive changes hinge on Cory Gibbs, who has been sick this week. Brian Forbes, Special to The Denver Post
