MONTE VISTA, Colo.—The Rio Grande County sheriff says a bone fragment found in Monte Vista is probably from an animal and not from a woman who disappeared more than six years ago.

Authorities say the 3-inch fragment was found outside a home that was once owned by a woman whose son lived with the missing woman, 19-year-old Danice Day.

Sheriff Brian Norton said Thursday an examination of the bone by a forensics laboratory in El Paso County indicates it probably isn’t human. Norton says a final determination will be made by a radiologist in the lab.

The bone was found in a cavity beneath a trap door the floor of a shed. Also in the cavity were a poster seeking information about Day and other items.

Day had two chidden.
