Loveland Ski Area announced Tuesday that it will open for the season at 8:30 a.m. today.
Arapahoe Basin, which originally planned a 9 a.m. opening today, switched it to 8:30 a.m. after Loveland’s plans were announced.
The resorts on opposite sides of the Continental Divide are North America’s first to open this season.
Loveland marketing director John Sellers said the media value for being the first to open is in excess of a million dollars. Last year, A-Basin was the first resort to open — on Oct. 10, the earliest date in its 61-year history.
Par puts Tolan at 11th spot.
Colorado’s Derek Tolan shot a final-round, even-par 72 to earn 11th place at the Prestige at PGA West collegiate tournament in La Quinta, Calif.
Tolan carded a three-round, 4-over 220 on the 7,152- yard, par-72 Greg Norman course at PGA West. Cal- Davis’ Nate Pistacchio earned medalist honors at 6-under 210. He won a playoff to finish ahead of Texas Christian’s Johan de Beer, also at 210.
TCU finished atop the team standings at 861. Colorado was 11th at 905.
DU freshman honored.
University of Denver freshman forward Luke Salazar was tabbed the WCHA rookie of the week after helping the Pioneers’ hockey team to a two-game, season-opening sweep of Notre Dame last weekend. Salazar recorded two goals, including a game-winner.
Smith leads CCU to women’s soccer victory.
Colorado Christian sophomore Jessica Smith scored twice in the second half to lead the Cougars (4-9, 1-7 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) to a 2-1 victory over Colorado-Colorado Springs in Lakewood.
Smith headed in a pass from Kimi Wright in the 66th minute, and then the Mountain Lions (3-10-1, 1-7) got the equalizer eight minutes later when Julia Saenz converted a crossing pass from Jessica Escobedo. Smith got the winner in the 80th minute, finding space in the middle and nailing a hard shot from about 20 yards.
