DENVER—Retiring Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo is continuing his criticism of the state’s policies on illegal immigration, calling on Gov. Bill Ritter to cut Denver’s government funding because it’s a “sanctuary city.”

Tancredo said in a letter to Ritter Friday that law enforcement has failed to implement laws against illegal immigration and is not referring suspected illegal immigrants to Immigration and Customs Enforcement as law requires.

Ritter spokesman Evan Dreyer called Tancredo’s letter a “political stunt” to distract attention from the slumping economy.

The Republican congressman ran for president on a campaign based on illegal immigration and has labeled Denver as a sanctuary city before. He retires in January.
