THORNTON — Two men were arrested today after they allegedly assaulted a Thornton police officer who was trying to arrest one of them.
The assault happened at 5 a.m. in Hunters Glen Marina Park, where police report they receive numerous calls for vandalism and graffiti.
The police officer who was not identified was trying to arrest one of the men for trespassing and while he was leading the handcuffed suspect into his car he was allegedly attacked from behind by the other suspect. The officer was thrown to the ground and repeatedly kicked and assaulted by both men, who then ran away, according to a police report.
After an extensive search by police they found one of men who was handcuffed inside an apartment at the Pinnacle at Hunters Glen. The other suspect was later identified, found and arrested.
Thornton police have identified the men as Todd Valdez, 24, of Broomfield and Kevin Romero,20, of Denver.
Valdez and Romero have been arrested for investigation of second-degree assault on a police officer, second-degree criminal trespass and resisting arrest.
The police officer was treated for minor cuts and abrasions at North Suburban Medical Center before being released .
