LAKEWOOD, Colo.—A Lakewood woman is accused of burning her dog by placing the animal on top of a burning telephone book on her stove.

The six-year-old Yorkshire terrier, a male named Bobo, was burned from the neck down on Sunday. Doctors say it’s likely he’ll survive.

Thirty-eight-year-old Tanya Martin was arrested on suspicion of fourth-degree arson and cruelty to animals. Her uncle, Leo Cordova, says Martin suffers from mental illness.

Police say Martin tied the dog up with speaker wire and placed him on the telephone book on top of a lit burner on the stove in her apartment. A neighbor who heard the dog yelping called 911.
