BOULDER, Colo.—Former college place-kicker Katie Hnida, who said she was sexually assaulted by a University of Colorado teammate in 2000, will be honored this week by a Boulder rape crisis center.

Hnida was one of the first women to play college football and went on to kick for the University of New Mexico after leaving Colorado. She now plays for the semipro Colorado Cobras.

She’ll be honored Friday by a Boulder group called Moving to End Sexual Assault, or MESA. MESA says Hnida embodies the survival traits of strength and bravery.

Hnida didn’t publicly disclose the assault until 2004. She says she didn’t report the incident at the time because she was afraid of the assailant and didn’t want a “media mess.”
