DETROIT — Red Wings forward Johan Franzen will be out for three to four weeks because of a sprained left knee, the team said Sunday.

The Detroit left winger damaged the medial collateral ligament during the second period of Saturday night’s 6-5 shootout win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Franzen was injured during a collision with Blackhawks defenseman Brent Sopel in the neutral zone. The Red Wings recalled left wing Ville Leino from Grand Rapids (Mich.) of the AHL to take his spot on the roster.

Footnotes.

Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro will see a doctor today for an undisclosed injury and is questionable to play tonight against the Rangers.

DiPietro, who has played in only three games following offseason knee surgery, was injured Saturday night during the first period of the Islanders’ 4-3 home loss to the Hurricanes. He allowed two goals on 12 shots and didn’t return after the intermission.

• Hurricanes center Brandon Sutter was discharged from a New York hospital after sustaining a concussion Saturday during a game against the Islanders.

The news wasn’t as good for defenseman Joni Pitkanen, who was also injured Saturday and will be out for a month. Pitkanen tore the meniscus in a knee and will undergo surgery this week.

• The Blue Jackets recalled goalie Dan LaCosta on an emergency basis from Syracuse (N.Y.) of the AHL and sent down defenseman Kris Russell.
