Nearly 7,000 Coloradans have better than $4.8 million in unclaimed federal tax refunds and economic- stimulus checks, and the Internal Revenue Service wants to find the owners.
Nationally, there are more than 279,000 unclaimed economic-stimulus checks totaling $163 million and about 104,000 refund checks worth $103 million, the IRS announced Monday in its effort to track down the payees. The average unclaimed stimulus check in Colorado is $577, while the average refund is $889. Nationally, the averages are $583 and $988.
The funds were returned to the IRS because of faulty addresses, either because the taxpayer moved or tax filings were inaccurate.
Denver has the highest number of Coloradans with unclaimed funds — 1,780 — while Colorado Springs is second with 774 and Aurora third at 648. The Denver Post
