If it’s any consolation to the Broncos’ beleaguered defense, the Denver offense hasn’t played well enough lately to win anyway.

It seems like so much ancient history, but the Broncos scored 41, 39 and 34 points in their first three games. Since then, they’ve scored 59 points in four games. But the troubling numbers don’t end there.

The Broncos had three turnovers in their first three games, but have accounted for a staggering 13 in the past four. That has left them saddled with a minus-9 turnover ranking, next to last among the NFL’s 32 teams.

Wait, there’s more. The Broncos have misplaced their quick-strike arsenal. Jay Cutler completed 19 passes of 20-plus yards in the first five games, but has had only three in the past three.

To paraphrase Dean Wormer, turning the ball over and misfiring on potential big plays is no way to go through life in the NFL. Now that Brandon Stokley and Tony Scheffler are working their way back into the lineup, Cutler needs to find them downfield.

Oh, and then the defense needs to stop somebody.
