BOULDER, Colo.—A Longmont man accused of shooting his wife’s cat to death is expected to learn his sentence in December after pleading guilty to a felony count of aggravated cruelty to animals.

Paul Vickers entered his plea in a Boulder County courtroom Thursday. He also pleaded guilty to a felony count of attempt to possess marijuana.

Longmont police said the 50-year-old Vickers sent e-mails to relatives after shooting the cat with a .22-caliber rifle in March, telling them he did it “to get even” with his wife. The two had allegedly been involved in a long-running argument and Vickers was angry with her.

Police said the cat, named Bootsie, was shot in the couple’s basement. Officers later found the cat’s body in a pond.

Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 19.
