COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Colorado Springs police have arrested a suspect in the 2007 death of a man whose throat was slit in a robbery that netted just $26.

Brett Allen Phillips of Colorado Springs was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of first-degree murder. He’s being held without bail.

The 38-year-old Phillips is accused of killing 33-year-old Elbert Nakai, whose body was found in a motel in February 2007.

Police say the men sometimes did day labor jobs together.

In an affidavit, investigators say Phillips’ ex-girlfriend recently told them she found a bloody knife in his clothes, and that Phillips told her he robbed and killed Nakai.

Police say Phillips told them Nakai attacked him first with a knife when Phillips refused to give Nakai a bottle of liquor.
