BOULDER, Colo.—A claim by an Asian-American man who said he was assaulted and forced at knife point to say “I love America” is being investigated by Boulder police as a bias-motivated crime.
The 22-year-old told police he was walking down the street early Friday with some friends singing a song from the comedy movie “Team America,” when the group was confronted by another group of men.
Police say one of those in the other group confronted the victim, used a derogatory term to describe his ethnicity and punched him. While holding a knife to the victim’s throat, the suspect punched him again and forced him to affirm his love for America.
Police were offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the suspect, who could face a felony menacing charge.
