DENVER—More than $3.6 million has been funneled into the congressional race between Marilyn Musgrave and Betsy Markey by political parties and interest groups, making it one of the most expensive contests in the country.
The Fort Collins Coloradoan reported Friday that an analysis of Federal Election Commission records show that by a ratio of 2.5 to 1 the money has gone to help Democrat Betsy Markey defeat Musgrave, the Republican incumbent.
The National Republican Congressional Committee has spent $1.12 million in support of Musgrave, while the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has spent $1.11 million to support Markey. Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund spent an additional $1.16 million to help Markey.
The newspaper found that a congressional race in Michigan and another in Pennsylvania were the only ones where independent groups spent more money than in the Colorado race.
