A pair of mountain bikers stumbled on human remains Saturday in a remote area on U.S. Forest Service land southwest of Boulder.
Deputies who hiked into the area guided by one of the bikers found the scattered bones of an individual spread over several hundred square feet and confirmed that they were human, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. Animals probably spread the bones in the area west of Boulder County’s Walker Ranch Open Space and south of Magnolia Road.
The age and sex of the individual are still undetermined, although some property found nearby is being used to help identify the remains, said Cmdr. Phil West. “Even with that, we will need dental and DNA evidence to verify who we think it might be.”
Foul play isn’t suspected, and the remains don’t “correlate to any missing-persons report that we have,” West said.
Identification is expected to take several weeks.
