University of Denver senior forward Taryn Hemmings was named the Sun Belt Conference women’s soccer player of the year by the league’s coaches Tuesday.

It was the second player of the year award for Hemmings, who earned the other in 2006. She sat out 2007 after hip surgery. This season, Hemmings, a Greeley West High School graduate, leads Denver in points (34), goals (14), assists (6), game-winning goals (seven), shots (80) and shots on goal (45) and leads the conference in goals, game-winning goals and points.

Also named to the all-conference first team were two of Hemmings’ teammates: junior midfielder Lizzy Carlson and senior defender Jessi Keller (from Ralston Valley High School).

DU coach Jeff Hooker, who has led the Pioneers to nine consecutive winning seasons, was named co-coach of the year along with Thomas Chestnutt of Florida International. The SBC tournament starts today in Denton, Texas, with No. 1 seed DU playing No. 8 Arkansas-Little Rock.

The University of Colorado is moving the starting time of the men’s basketball season opener vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, so fans can attend the the Pearl Street Stampede rally for the football team at 7, and then make it to the basketball game at the Coors Events Center.

The Nuggets’ D-League team, the Colorado 14ers, is hosting a draft party Friday from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at Westminster’s LoDo’s Bar and Grill, at 104th and Federal. The 14ers have the second pick in the draft.

Denver senior forward Kyle Christensen was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation soccer co-player of the week after he scored three goals last weekend in victories against San Jose State and Sacramento State.

CU honoree.

Colorado senior Callie Webster was awarded Big 12 volleyball defensive player of the week after leading the Buffs in a four-set win over then-No. 2 and previously undefeated Nebraska.
