
The drinks of choice at GOP campaign headquarters Tuesday night? Vodka cocktails and Fat Tire beer, Marriott hotel staffers said.
Despite troubling news for their party at the top of the ticket, longtime GOP activists Ken Maier and Gus Szala told jokes over two Fat Tires.
“This feels like a Barry Goldwater party,” quipped Maier, referring to the 1964 GOP candidate who suffered a staggering loss. “But I think (Sen. John) McCain will get more electoral votes.”
The Republican Party may have been on a downturn around 8:30 p.m., with many outlets calling the presidential race for Barack Obama and the Senate race for Mark Udall, but the celebration was hopping.
Supporters and party stalwarts swarmed the ballroom, drinks in hand as a parade of local GOP stars made their way across stage.
