BOULDER COUNTY — A pair of mountain bikers stumbled onto human remains in a remote area on U.S. Forest Service land southwest of Boulder on Saturday.

Deputies who hiked into the area guided by one of the bikers found human bones spread over several hundred square feet, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. Animals probably spread the bones in the area west of Boulder County’s Walker Ranch Open Space and south of Magnolia Road.

The age and sex of the individual are still undetermined, though some property found nearby is being used to help identify the remains, said Cmdr. Phil West. “Even with that we will need dental and DNA evidence to verify who we think it might be.”

Foul play isn’t suspected and the remains don’t “correlate to any missing persons report that we have,” West said.
