DENVER—Colorado Secretary of State Mike Coffman has been elected to Congress, the Republican handily winning an open seat vacated by Rep. Tom Tancredo in a district south of Denver.
Coffman defeated overmatched Democrat Hank Eng. With 71 percent of the projected vote counted, Coffman had 60 percent to 40 percent for Eng.
Coffman was heavily favored to win the conservative district. But Coffman faced criticism from Democrats who grumbled that elections officials statewide were illegally scrubbing voters from the rolls within a federally prohibited period before the election. Coffman argued that only duplicate or dead voters were being removed, though a judge ultimately ordered to cleanup stopped.
