KHARTOUM, Sudan — Two Sudanese dailies will suspend publication for three days and their journalists will go on a 24-hour hunger strike to protest state censorship, managers of the papers said Tuesday.
The journalists said they are resisting a mounting crackdown on freedom of expression ahead of elections expected next year.
Salah Kajam, publisher of independent Ajras al-Hurria, which means Freedom Bells in Arabic, said state security agents regularly visit his paper’s offices late at night to remove articles critical of the government, reports of violence in Darfur and mysterious outbreaks of fever in south Sudan among other things.
Rai al-Shaab, a paper connected with the Islamist opposition, said it will also stop printing until Friday. Some journalists at other papers said they will stop writing in solidarity.
