A winter storm is bearing down on northern Colorado, and scattered snow is possible for Denver on Wednesday.

Scattered rain showers in the mountains should turn to snow today, according to the National Weather Service, as a cold front moves across the state.

Skies over Denver today should be mostly cloudy as the high temperature for the city tops out at about 67 degrees, the weather service reports.

Tonight, a slight chance of rain showers in the city before 11 p.m. will give way to scattered snow showers as the low temperature drops to about 34 degrees.

Travel in the mountains tonight and Wednesday could be hampered by blowing snow, according to the weather service.

Snow could be heavy in the north and central mountains of Colorado on Wednesday, and winds could gust up to 45 mph, the weather service said.

Several inches of snow could accumulate in mountain areas by Wednesday evening, the weather service said.

The service has posted a winter-storm warning for parts of the mountains starting at noon today and running through 3 a.m. Thursday.

Up to 14 inches of snow is possible for higher elevations of the Flat Tops area as well as the Elkhead, Park, Gore and Elk ranges, the weather service said.

In Denver on Wednesday, snow showers are likely before 11 a.m., and the high temperature will top out at about 46 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph, and the chance for precipitation in Denver will be 60 percent, but little or no snow accumulation is expected in the city.

Denver’s weather should rebound a bit Thursday, with mostly sunny skies and a high temperature of about 47 degrees. Winds Thursday in Denver should be between 15 and 21 mph with gusts up to 31 mph, the weather service said.
