Getting your player ready...

The Broncos as I type these words are in the air en route to Cleveland.

What’s that? I hear ya. I’m wondering if they should bother showing up, too.

Maybe Brady Quinn’s starting debut will turn into a baptism of fire. Maybe the Broncos will pressure him into all kinds of bonehead mistakes.

Or maybe the Broncos will play like they have since another road game, their late September matchup with the Chiefs.

I don’t know which Broncos team will show up. But it’s more than troubling, the depths to which this team can sink on any given Sunday.

At times, they look like the worst team in the league. At other times, they look like an up-and-coming squad teeming with young talent that’s only going to get better.

Tell ya what. When the bad times come — and trust me, they will — you might want to seek solace in all those young players. They’re wildly inconsistent at the moment, but they’ll get better. And they’ll be better next season than they are today.

Trouble is, all of those young players are on the offensive side of the ball. Until Mike Shanahan finds their counterparts on the other side of the ball, the Broncos will continue to struggle.
