DENVER—Health officials say eight children sickened in an E. coli outbreak in the Evergreen area may have been infected through exposure to elk droppings while playing outside.

State health officials said Friday that elk droppings in the Evergreen area have tested positive for the same strain of E. coli bacteria found in the children, ages 4 to 12.

The illnesses occurred beginning in July. The most recent case was in late October.

Health officials are still investigating how the elk might have been exposed.

They recommend that children wash their hands after playing outside and before eating, and that shoes and boots be cleaned off before entering homes.
