NEW YORK — Evan Longoria won the American League rookie of the year award Monday by unanimous vote, and Geovany Soto ran away with the National League honor.

Following a season of breakthroughs for the AL champion Rays, Longoria became the first Tampa Bay player to win a national award from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. The third baseman, who batted .272 with 27 homers and 85 RBIs despite missing five weeks after breaking his right wrist Aug. 7, became the league’s first unanimous winner since Nomar Garciaparra in 1997.

Soto, who hit .285 with 23 homers, 35 doubles and 86 RBIs while helping the Cubs win the NL Central, became the first catcher to win rookie of the year in either league since Mike Piazza of the Dodgers in 1993.

Padres withdraw offer to Hoffman

SAN DIEGO — The Padres withdrew their $4 million offer to Trevor Hoffman, leaving it unclear whether they would continue to negotiate with the career saves leader.

For openers, it’s Phillies and Braves.

The World Series champion Phillies will host the Braves in the 2009 opener April 5. The Sunday night game, originally scheduled for the following day, will be broadcast on ESPN2.

Nationals, Marlins make trade

WASHINGTON — The agent for starting pitcher Scott Olsen and outfielder Josh Willingham said they have been traded from the Marlins to the Nationals.
, citing sources, reported the Marlins would receive second baseman Emilio Bonifacio and two minor-leaguers in the deal.

Mariners considering Mills

SEATTLE — Former Colorado Springs Sky Sox manager Brad Mills interviewed for the Mariners’ managerial position and is one of seven finalists for the vacancy.

The other candidates are: Joey Cora, Chip Hale, DeMarlo Hale, Jose Oquendo, Randy Ready and Don Wakamatsu.

Former Dodgers star Roe dies.

Former Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Preacher Roe died of colon cancer Sunday in West Plains, Mo. He was 92.
