And now for the reality check of the day, brought to you by What, you think we’re going to go corporate in this space? Not a chance, Sparky.
Anyway, the reality check du jour comes in the form of an e-mail from the Las Vegas Hilton, the world’s largest sports book. According to the Hilton’s oddsmakers, the Chargers have a better chance of winning the AFC than the Broncos.
The second-place Chargers, that is. According to the Vegas wiseguys, San Diego may not be leading the AFC West, but the Bolts still are the team to beat in the division.
The Chargers are 7-1 to win the conference, tied with the Colts, Patriots, Jets and Ravens, two notches down from the Titans at 8-5. In between are the Steelers at 5-1.
The Broncos? They’re eighth in the conference at 18-1 odds, tied with Miami.
Moral to the story? The Broncos may be leading the division, but there’s every reason to think they won’t seal the deal. For one thing, that embarrassing loss to the Chiefs could come back to haunt them at season’s end. If the Chargers win out over the Chiefs and Raiders and finish tied with the Broncos in the standings, they would win the division.
Then you have the injury factor. A few more sprains and strains and the Broncos’ injury list would be thicker than the Manhattan phone book.
