Getting your player ready...

Three keys to the season:

Defense. The Rams have to get stops, because “we’re not the type of team that is going to outscore people,” Holt said. To that end, she wants everyone in “man” coverage with center Amaka Uzomah now a veteran inside enforcer.

Patience. If the shot isn’t there, Holt wants the team to be patient in a motion offense.

Positive attitude. They are learning a new system, and they need some wins to stay upbeat. Said Holt, “We understand what we’re up against.”

Most improved part of team: Holt saw considerable defensive progress between the first and second exhibition games.

Biggest surprise: Bonnie Barbee. A 3-point specialist last season, the sophomore guard is providing a nice spark off the bench as she grows more confident in her role. Holt is also seeing the promise in freshman Meghan Heimstra, the all-state player from Longmont’s Silver Creek High School.

Who has to take ownership of the team? Kandy Beemer, right. The senior guard steps in for Sara Hunter. “She’s my captain. She needs to be a vocal leader on and off the court,” Holt said.

Game/stretch most worrisome: “All of them,” said Holt, who said she doesn’t see a lull in the schedule.

Roster adjustments: Two imports from the Netherlands, Chatilla van Grinsven and Natalie van den Adel, are sitting out expected penalties for European competition. This is commonplace in the NCAA. There are no significant injuries or unplanned redshirts.

Coming out strong: It doesn’t bode well to start with two road games (Wichita State and Colorado). The Rams have a nice five-game homestand, including a tournament that could match CSU with Florida State. Then Denver and Northern Colorado are must wins for in-state pride.
