Parker Orms, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound running back-safety-returner at Class 4A Wheat Ridge, committed orally Sunday to the University of Colorado.
“I had fallen off the CU bandwagon for several years,” Wheat Ridge coach Reid Kahl said. “But it’s exciting and a good fit for Parker. I know a lot of people have questioned his size, but I’m telling you, he’s a player . . . and CU is where his heart is.”
While rushing for 2,322 yards and 33 touchdowns, Orms has lifted the Farmers (12-0) into this weekend’s semifinals. Ultimately, Orms was recruited as a safety, but Kahl said Orms getting some offensive time wouldn’t be a shock. Neil H. Devlin, The Denver Post
Longtime Jeffco coach Beaty dies.
Bob Beaty, a former longtime, innovative coach of multiple high school sports in Jefferson County, died from cancer on Friday. He was 64. “He was one of those guys who never let it get to him,” said Al Talbot, another Jeffco coaching figure. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rockland Community Church in Genesee, with a reception afterward at Red Rocks Country Club.
Regis wins RMAC volleyball title.
Jessica Howe’s 20 kills led the Regis women’s volleyball team to a 3-1 victory (22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-18) over Mesa State to win the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship in Kearney, Neb. It was the Rangers’ third RMAC title and first since 1998. They earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
CSU volleyball finishes unbeaten at home.
The Colorado State volleyball team finished with a second straight undefeated home record after sweeping Nevada-Las Vegas 27-25, 25-12, 25-22. It was the Rams’ 28th consecutive win at Moby Arena.
Conference champ DU soccer loses to New Mexico.
Simon Ejdemyr scored on a penalty kick in the 67th minute as New Mexico ended the regular season with a 1-0 win over Denver in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s soccer game in Albuquerque. The Pioneers, who clinched their first MPSF championship last week, will find out their NCAA Tournament berth today.
Sweep gives DU volleyball a division title.
The University of Denver volleyball team won a second consecutive Sun Belt Conference West Division regular-season title, sweeping Arkansas State 25-14, 25-19, 25-18 in its regular-season finale at Hamilton Gymnasium.
