DENVER—A 27-year-old Sheridan High School teacher accused of having a sexual encounter with a male student has been formally charged and suspended from her job.

Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey charged Melissa Snow on Monday with three counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust, with one of those charges alleging a pattern of behavior.

Snow is free on a $50,000 bond.

According to a news release from Morrissey’s office, Snow was arrested Nov. 5 after a joint investigation by the Denver and Sheridan police departments found probable cause to believe that she had sexually assaulted a student more than once at a Denver location.

Denver district attorney spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough said the student is a teenager, but that authorities have decided not to release his specific age in an effort to protect his identity. She declined to release further details on the allegations against Snow.

Snow is scheduled to appear in Denver District Court on Wednesday to be advised of the charges. Kimbrough said Monday she did not know if Snow has retained an attorney.

A spokesman for the Denver police declined to comment on the case, and a spokesman for the Sheridan police did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment Monday night.

Snow, an English teacher, has taught all grades of students at Sheridan High School since she began working there in fall 2005, according to the school district. The school has about 500 students.
