A woman is in critical condition after she inexplicably walked onto the westbound Sixth Avenue freeway during rush hour this morning.
The woman was struck by a van at 8:10 a.m. on the road between Kipling and Simms streets, said Steve Davis, Lakewood police spokesman.
“It’s unknown why she entered the highway,” Davis said.
Bystanders told authorities the woman appeared to be upset, said Steve Hipwell, Lakewood police spokesman.
She was rushed to St. Anthony Central Hospital, Hipwell said.
“Her injuries are extremely serious,” Davis said.
Traffic backed up as officers closed the highway.
