WASHINGTON — During a speech last week, Cardinal J. Francis Stafford, the former archbishop of Denver, described President-elect Barack Obama’s stand on abortion as cause for Catholics to weep tears of betrayal.

The Catholic News Agency reported Thursday that Stafford, who is now based in Rome, told students at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., that though Obama clearly stated his “anti-life agenda” prior to the election, Americans were too excited at the prospect of electing a black president.

Now that he has been chosen, the cardinal predicted, “I foresee the next several years as being among the most divisive in our nation’s history.”

The news agency posted the full text of his lecture titled, “Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II: Being True in Body and Soul,” online at document.php?n=780.
