DURANGO — Durango police are trying to retrieve more than 60 pieces of expensive jewelry created by former U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell.

The pieces were stolen at gunpoint from Sorrel Sky Gallery in Durango on Monday night. Campbell’s daughter, Shanan Campbell Wells, owns the gallery on Main Street.

Police said the armed robber ordered a gallery worker to unlock the two cases and then ordered the employee to the back of the store.

The cases included 18-karat gold rings, pendants and bracelets — including one valued at $40,000, Durango police said.

Campbell retired from the Senate in 2005.
