Durango police are trying to retrieve more than 60 pieces of expensive jewelry created by former U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell.

The pieces were stolen at gunpoint from Sorrel Sky Gallery in Durango on Monday night. Campbell’s daughter, Shanan Campbell Wells, owns the gallery on Main Street.

Police said the armed robber ordered a gallery worker to unlock the two cases and then ordered the employee to the back of the store.

The cases included 18-karat gold rings, pendants and bracelets — including one valued at $40,000, Durango police said.

The former senator’s Native American designs were featured in the gallery’s winter newsletter. Campbell retired from the Senate in 2005.

The robber is described as fair-skinned, possibly Hispanic, in his mid-20s with short hair and brown eyes. He was about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and was wearing a black beanie, dark baggy pants and skateboarder-style shoes. He had a black backpack.

Anyone with information should call the Durango Police Department at 970-375-4700.
