NORTHGLENN, Colo.—A 38-year-old man whose stepchildren were killed in a collision has pleaded guilty to reduced charges in the beating death of the other driver.

Phillip Chavez of Loveland pleaded guilty Friday to reckless manslaughter in the death of 62-year-old Glenn Ryburn of Northglenn. He previously faced second-degree murder and other charges.

Authorities say Ryburn’s vehicle rear-ended Chavez’s, instantly killing 14-year-old Damien Noyes and 13-year-old Angel Noyes, on March 8.

An arrest affidavit alleges Chavez assaulted Ryburn while he was still buckled in his car after the crash.

Ryburn never regained consciousness and died May 16. The coroner ruled he died of blunt force trauma to his head.
