You think your family cellphone plan is complicated? Imagine putting 6,000 relatives on it. That’s essentially what the state of Colorado has done. The state’s Office of Information and Technology just completed an 18-month effort to consolidate the cellphone plans of executive branch departments. That means that cellphone wielding employees under Gov. Bill Ritter can share minutes, saving the state $600,000 a year, officials said.

In layman’s terms, “what we’ve done is move the state of Colorado onto a family share plan,” said John Conley, deputy director of the office. State officials now can easily measure the number of phones and minutes used for each provider, Conley said.”During tough economic times, government must lead by example in showing best practices in efficient management practices,” Ritter, a Democrat, said in a statement. Indiana implemented a similar cellphone plan consolidation two years ago, Conley said. Tim Hoover, The Denver Post
