SAN LUIS, Colo.—A small school district in San Luis has laid off two teachers and two other staffers because of deep financial problems.

The Centennial School District board approved the midyear layoffs last week to help eliminate a budget shortfall and build up its reserves to state-required levels.

The board also cut two paraprofessional positions to half-time and is leaving two vacant positions open.

The board says a librarian is expected to retire at the end of the school year and won’t be replaced, and another teaching position will be cut for the 2009-10 school year.

Officials say the district is outspending its income, enrollment is dropping and property-tax payments are lagging.

The district had 25 teachers and 217 students in 2007.
