Good-hearted donors brought thousands of turkeys to the Denver Rescue Mission after the group issued an appeal for more birds because of increased demand as a result of tough economic times.
The mission announced that as of this morning, it had received 7,314 turkeys and that more were coming in.
The mission had announced that because of the huge jump in demand, it needed an additional 2,000 Thanksgiving turkeys to reach its goal of 6,000 turkeys by Wednesday.
But today, Greta Walker, spokeswoman for the mission, said that because its goal had been surpassed, the mission would give the additional frozen turkeys to smaller agencies and churches.
These agencies, requesting about 4,000 turkeys, include the Senior High Rise Food Bank, Wishing Well, Mean Street Ministries, Frierson International Ministries, Agape Church, Deliverance Tabernacle and Redeemed Ones Jail and Prison Ministries.
Today, the Denver Rescue Mission gave out 1,250 of the turkeys to working-poor families in the Thanksgiving Banquet-in-a-Box distribution. The mission will use more turkeys on Wednesday to serve 1,000 meals at the Great Thanksgiving Banquet at the Lawrence Street Shelter.
