Bad news on Wall Street did little to dampen the enthusiasm of runners and walkers who participated in Mile High United Way’s 35th annual Turkey Trot on Thursday.

“We were a little worried that maybe people would want to just stay home, but plenty of people showed up,” said Turkey Trot spokeswoman Stacy Haskell.

More than 7,600 runners and walkers took advantage of clear skies to take on the 4-mile course at Washington Park. More than $100,000 was raised for various metro-area nonprofit groups.

Both totals were about the same as 2007, Haskell said.

The Turkey Trot was aimed at tackling three initiatives: school readiness, youth success and adult self-sufficiency, said Christine Benero, Mile High United Way president and chief executive.

“What happened here today will make a big difference for those families and for all of us,” she said.
