A defining characteristic in the Rockies’ finest team ever was its bullpen. Not only could the 2007 reliever corps shut down opponents, but it had two lefties — Brian Fuentes and Jeremy Affeldt — as a bridge to closer Manuel Corpas.

As it stands, the current bullpen has no lefties, which explains the increased pursuit of free agent Joe Beimel and continued interest in Alan Embree, Glendon Rusch and Brian Shouse. cq

“There’s been some follow-up talk, but we are still feeling things out,” said Joe Sroba, Beimel’s agent.

Beimel has allowed just one home run over the past two seasons. While the Rockies aren’t expected to make an aggressive move before next week’s winter meetings, Beimel might be gone by then given the interest.

Trever Miller, another Rockies’ target, signed a one-year, $2-million deal with the Cardinals on Wednesday, choosing them over the Rays.
